It’s not a new reference. In fact, I’ve heard this from many people working in radio, when you try to get out, they pull you back in. A quote from one of the Godfather movies. It’s different for us radio folks, we love it so much, we’re dying to get back in, and isn’t that just like the mafia?
I took 15 years off several years ago. I had moved away for a few small market gigs, as one does, and that gets old, especially if you are one who wants to settle down. I’m not her. Sure, I did the get married, have kids thing. And I’m glad for it, but I’ve never felt settled. The 15 years I was out, I was still in the entertainment industry. And I picked an even harder section of it to settle into, talk about getting your ego beaten down. So, getting back into radio was an easy choice. And I couldn’t wait.
It was a long and winding road to get me here, and at some point, I needed to figure out a creative way to continue because moving around with tots wouldn’t be easy. I moved everyone across the country once, but I’m an adult, so I couldn’t continue that nonsense. But I would have, if I could have. Grownups need to be grownups though, so here we are.
Sadly, the jobs are fewer now, and the pay is way less. (It’s never been great for those of us who are not Howard Stern.) So, you might have to drive for a rideshare company on your way home from your morning drive gig. I’m not sure that’s even possible anymore now that you have to work 8-12 hours/day, not the 6 they used to require. Plus, if you want to keep your coveted spot, you better be prepared to be a “utility person” who can also write copy, produce ads, and maybe even go out on sales calls. It ain’t what it used to be ya all. But I wouldn’t be doing anything else with my time except be in this crazy, exciting, exhilarating, entertaining section of the entertainment industry.
