It’s ridiculously hard to find a decent salesperson. You know the one? The one with the rhythm. The one you can count on. The one who makes the calls. The one who has that thing, that you can’t really put your finger on. Oh, wait, I know, the one who gets off their butt and works.
Since I work in a remote environment where my employees work under their own supervision in their own office (far, far away from me), I cannot (and will not) micromanage. But for cryin’ eyes, do what you say and say what you’ll do. Sometimes I feel like I’m on a bad date.
It doesn’t matter if you are hiring a salesperson on salary, salary plus commission, straight commission or salary with bonus structure, the good ones are hard to find. I’ve had salespeople of all stripes work for me in all pay structure environments. They’ve got their excuses as to why they can’t strike a deal or why they go to the next best thing and break up with me.
A smart General Manager once told me, nobody can sell your product like you can, because you created it. So true. But what if I want a day off from anchoring, researching, managing, invoicing, paying and “smiling and dialing”?
I guess I’m still looking for my perfect work husband.
