I believe it’s best to stay away from political (and religious, for that matter) discussions during otherwise happier times. So maybe a deer in the headlights look is the way to go while family is here this week??

We’ve all heard the warnings about getting into deep discussions when we are trying to have a light-hearted visit with family and/or friends. Honestly, your best bet is to listen with an open heart and not respond.

I might also work to pivot the conversation to the weather, not to be too cliché, or obvious, but why wreck a perfectly good time with discussions about serious subjects at all?

You can however discuss what holiday gifts you may get for folks, what everyone wants, a gift exchange party, a White Elephant gift exchange or why it’s been so hot this fall (but, don’t talk Climate Change! Maybe what the groundhog said?).
