My words of the year are, “there’s no such thing as ‘Quiet Quitting'”. It’s called straight up laziness. Oh and while we’re here, “Ghosting” needs a new synonym, like maybe straight-up “F L A K E”?
When trying to hire people this year, the first thing out of their mouth/keyboard is: how much does it pay? I hate to sound like a “boomer”, but… I was taught, that that’s rude. Who asks that in their first sentence? What about: will this job fit my schedule, goals, lifestyle, dreams, morals, desires… I could go on.
This year I’ve noticed a new trend, it’s not Quiet Quitting — it’s Not Showing Up At All. Or, trying to negotiate more pay after agreeing to the pay offered. Or on the other side of things, being hired, then ignored. Ghosting in business and in partnerships isn’t just totally offensive, it’s straight up – weak.
If you’re looking for a job and you catch an interview or start a conversation, why not take it to the next level. If you lead with what you expect for pay, you look greedy and uninterested from go. And for me, I know you won’t stay around. In my business, media, it’s known that people start in small/micro markets, and then they tend to move on. But now, people leave before they start! I talked to a guy at a tiny market radio station who was just hired out of college. The first thing out of his mouth was, I prefer TV, I know what that means, #byeboy.
I recently spoke to someone at a major market station who brazenly told me they were looking for people in their 30’s (to match who was on the air already). It was a veiled #ageism comment that I chose not to engage in. But isn’t that illegal? Or maybe it’s really just, we’re paying $35,000/year in market #1, still interested? #nope
I had another major market guy blame my, very talented people, for his mistakes to keep his own job. Dang, people still do that?
Are there any hard workers out there anymore?
Note: if you are just out of college, why should you expect a 6 figure income? Yes it’s been a while, but I got $12,000/year for my first radio gig in market #2! There are still stations out there paying that yes, and that I would understand turning down now. But what if you made that and only had to work one hour/day? Wouldn’t you want to explore that? Or is it just me? #becurious
