Remember when Ronald Reagan and the Neocons promoted the so-called “Trickle Down” theory? 💧
Back in the 1980’s the term was used to explain how government economic policies would disproportionately favored the upper class, or the wealthiest among us, and that could somehow cause a trickle down of wealth to the rest of society. The term’s also been used a lot over the years to refer to taxing and spending policies that have ended in the widening of income inequality. Democrats used the term for years against Republicans like Reagan and his successor Bush, and his son, W. 💧
I don’t know about you, but did you even feel at least a drizzle? Did it trickle on to you and help you pick yourself up by the bootstraps? I was in High School at the time, so I’m not sure. My parents loved Ronnie, so I thought, sure I’ll vote for him too. I sold shoes to the wealthiest of the wealthy in Southern California back then, so I can’t tell you if I felt even a splash from this era. I did score some pretty cool shoes as a sassy 19-year-old though.💧
Fast forward to today, I feel doused, but not how you think. đź’¦
The Real Trickle Downis when the top tier of society, the super elite, get all the tax breaks and the lowest income earners in society pay a higher tax rate than them. Or is that a trickle up? I took journalism in school, I wasn’t a Mathlete, so I’m unsure. 💧
Hear me out.
I was recently talking to my CPA about my next quarterly tax payment, good stuff. Both of us sarcastically extolled what the real trickle down was, (insert sarcasm here) how we are paying more money for everything and the wealthiest amongst us are advertising $10 million dollar apartments in war-torn countries? IYKYK. ‼️
We also discussed how the middle class, and even the upper middle class are suffering now. We charmed each other with tales of how each of us had lost longtime and short-term clients due to whatever kind of policy is actually happening financially to the rest of us right now. Do you feel it? 🔫
There are radio stations going dark, they also were before this era, but this is entirely different. They are going, going, gone! And it’s just so sad to see people losing their jobs, wondering if they have a future doing what they love or must they get a job slinging hash now? (No offense to hash slingers everywhere.)
Only time will tell. ⏰
